Dr Arun Kr Dev
Director
Newcastle University Marine International (NUMI)-Singapore

Dr. Arun Kr. Dev is a highly professional naval architect & marine engineer with specialization in ship & offshore hydrodynamics as well as ship & offshore structures. Due to working in shipyards, Dr. Dev has experiences in management of new shipbuildings in terms of design, engineering and project engineering management. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering in 1977 from Bangladesh University of Engineering & Technology (BUET), Dhaka with a First Class First. He then worked a couple of years in a ship design & inspection office (Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority – BIWTA) with a Dutch Expert Team in Dhaka. As a young Naval Architect, his first accomplishment was study, completion and publication of the book “Guidelines for Construction of Inland Steel Vessels” in 1980, which was done first time in Bangladesh. Dr. Dev is the pioneering designer of first Bay-crossing coastal cargo vessels (NK Class) in 1980. 26 nos. of 600 DWT Dry Cargo vessels were built based on his single design in Bangladesh and laid the foundation for building coastal cargo vessels in Bangladesh now. He left Bangladesh in early 1981 to work in shipyards (first Jurong Shipyard and then Singmarine Shipyard) in Singapore.

In 1983, Dr. Dev received his ORS (Overseas Research Students) award to do his Master of Science by research in Marine (Offshore) Technology as a PG Research Student at Strathclyde University on a noble topic titled “Motion Characteristics of a Ring Hull Semi-submersible in Waves (numerical & experimental)” and obtained his MSc degree in 1985. In 1991, he again worked as a research scientist in Shiphydromechanics Laboratory of Delft University of Technology (TUDelft), Netherlands, from where he obtained his Doctorate in 1996 on a thesis titled “Viscous Effects in Drift Forces on Semi-Submersibles” working under a renowned professor named Prof. Dr. Ir. J.A. Pinkster. The research works contained extensive numerical works validated with many innovative experimental works carried out at both TUDelft and MARIN.

Since 1997, Dr. Dev worked for more than 10 years in Keppel Singmarine Pte Ltd in various positions. He was the Deputy General Manager (Technical) in Keppel Singmarine Pte Ltd and also General Manager of Marine Technology Development Pte Ltd, a Company under Keppel Offshore & Marine, where R&D is done for ship design & development. Dr. Dev has also worked as a Structural Engineering designing jackets for offshore Malaysia. Dr. Dev has also worked as a local consultant for NORAD, Norway for design standardization and maintenance of inland steel landing pontoons in Bangladesh in eighties.

Dr. Dev has recently (2008) joined Newcastle University Marine International (NUMI) - Singapore for its BEng with honours programme in Naval Architecture as its first Director. Before taking up this latest academic career, he also taught at University Technology Malaysia as well as in Singapore Maritime Academy. He has also attended numerous courses on technology, management, leadership, etc. at various programmes over his entire professional career as part of continuous professional development.

Dr. Dev is a Fellow of RINA and IMarEST, a Member of SNAME since 1978, an elected council member of RINA and also the Immediate Past Chairman of the Singapore Joint Branch of RINA and IMarEST. Dr. Dev is also a member of ECOR, Canada and Fellow of SNAMES, Singapore. He is registered as CEng with the UK Engineering Council and CMarTech & CMarEng with IMarEST, UK. Dr. Dev has published many technical papers in international conferences and journals. Dr. Dev was the Chairman of the organizing committee of international conferences on Technology and Operation of Offshore Support Vessels, “OSV Singapore 2005” and “OSV Singapore 2007”, which is a bi-ennial conference started by the Singapore Joint Branch.

Dr. Dev has led many different designs of tugs and OSVs of various bollard pull capacities. One of the large design projects Dr Dev has also led is the design of a 28K DWT FSO (ice class) for LUKoil in Caspian Sea. His design especially is mainly in the areas of hull optimization, structural design, machinery layout and system design, propulsion optimization, DP-capability, accommodation layouts, noise & vibration, increasing deck area and cargo volume, critical machinery selection criteria, etc.

Dr. Dev was born and grew up in southern part of Bangladesh, where he saw boats, motors launches and paddle steamers almost daily since very young in the river flowing past his home town. It perhaps created a lasting impression in his young mind to become so close connected with ships and then offshore structures through postgraduate education.
